Yoga & Treating Obesity

Obesity is an escalating problem in the United States and most of the Western world. The ancient Eastern practice of yoga is now being introduced to help treat obesity. According to two National Health and Nutrition Examination (NHANE) Surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (the CDC), the rate of obesity among adults has more than doubled in the last thirty years; for children, the rate of those who are overweight has tripled. Obesity is variously categorized as a disease,

Obesity Gene

A novel gene that produces a protein called "beacon" plays an important role in the development of obesity and diabetes, says Professor Greg R. Collier. Dr. Collier and his team of researchers at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia, have found that the protein increases appetite, body weight, and the incidence of type 2 diabetes in desert rats. Because beacon is identical in rats and humans, the beacon gene represents a potential target for the development of anti-obesity drugs, the researchers contend.

The Link Between Obesity and Abnormal Sleep Patterns

Overweight adults who experience excessive fatigue may not be tiring out simply because of the extra weight they are carrying around. Several studies have linked obesity with abnormal sleep patterns and disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea.

Though researchers have yet to determine causality (does the extra weight cause the poor sleep patterns, or vice versa?), there is an abundance of evidence pointing to the fact that overweight adults are disproportionately exposed to the health risks associated with getting abnormal amounts of sleep.

The Price of Obesity

With obesity at epidemic proportions around the globe, an unprecedented number of individuals may now find themselves at greater risk of developing a wide range of additional health problems. Asthma, type-2 diabetes, and certain types of cancers are just a few of the myriad diseases and conditions that health care professionals and research scientists have associated with elevated body mass index.

The Link Between Obesity and Poverty

Obesity is commonly viewed as having three primary influences: genetics, diet, and exercise. But if future studies support recent research, a fourth factor may eventually be added to that list: economics.

Health Consequences of Dangerous Dieting

The negative health effects of being overweight or obese have been well-documented, but that doesn't mean all efforts to lose weight are inherently beneficial to one's health. In fact, individuals who resort to drastic measures to rid themselves of excess or unwanted weight risk significant consequences as a result.

Biology Is Not Destiny - Part I

I just remember one September night a few months after leaving Wellspring Academy; it was after homecoming or something.  And I was like, ‘If I don't control myself now,  I'm gonna be put back in the same place I was before.'  And things have to change in my life.  And I can't sit here and whine that this is my biology and this is what is meant to be for my life.  I have to be happy that I have the chance to do this.  So I was like, ‘Get over yourself.  Just do it.'  - Vicki M.
